Anyway, I don't think you should be ashamed of asking for money upfront, even if you do take a long time to finish (can do split payment or something if it makes you feel *too* guilty, I suppose). For a reputable artist, getting paid up front is standard practice, and anyone who's uncomfortable with that is probably a creep.

Hopefully that jackass at least feels guilty for being a douchebag.

I genuinely hope that you don't have to run into these kinds of parasites-- I mean assholes--in the future.
Seems the best way to combat them is to put your foot down when needed. It might drive some customers away, asking for payment upfront... but if those "customers" are bothered by that, then they aren't worth your time or energy. That's the power of effectively running your own business--you won't get in trouble with management if you try and defend your business and rights as an artist.
